Why we need to organize

Hello! On Data And Design offers freely accessible talks by experts from the information . Your contribution ensures that these events can take place free of charge. The On Data And Design association (based in Basel, Switzerland) is committed to promoting innovation and education in the field of information design and data visualization. Beyond talks and events, we are building something essential to our profession—a common voice for information designers across national borders.

Our field is small but mighty, and by connecting across countries and studios, we can stop reinventing the wheel individually and start building collective strength. This community isn't just about networking—it's about creating practical solutions to the business challenges we all face, regardless of which country we work in.

Driven by your needs

As information designers, we often focus on the creative aspects of our work—as we should! But many of us haven't been taught the business fundamentals that protect our work and set clear expectations for clients.

The power of common ground: As a member, you'll have access to General Terms & Conditions (Version 3.1 – 2025) that have been developed collectively, reflecting the real-world needs of information designers. Most importantly, you'll understand how to use them effectively—including how to reference them in your proposals and contracts.
Provide practical business tools, starting with GTCs but expanding based on your feedback
Focus on collaborative problem-solving by addressing the issues that matter most to information designers
Build on collective experience, leveraging the diverse expertise of members across countries

Why General Terms & Conditions really matter

Our community development is guided by the real challenges you face. While T&Cs might not be as exciting as design projects, they form a crucial foundation for professional practice. Similarly, we'll tackle other «unsexy but essential» topics that make a real difference to your day-to-day work and long-term success.

As members identify important topics for our field, we'll work together to develop resources and best practices—from ethical guidelines to project management approaches specific to information design.
Establish you as a professional. With standard T&Cs used by information design studios worldwide, you position yourself as part of an established profession
Protect your intellectual property. Carefully crafted usage rights ensure your work isn’t used beyond the agreed scope without proper compensation
Set clear payment terms. From deposit requirements to payment schedules—these details prevent the all-too-common struggles with delayed payments
Define project scope boundaries with clear terms about revision rounds and scope to save you from unlimited client changes that eat into your profit margins
Provide a collective voice. When multiple studios and freelancers use the same terms, clients begin to see them as industry standards, not just personal preferences

Why international collaboration matters

Information design is a specialized field with professionals scattered across different countries. When working in isolation, we face recurring issues that limit our collective potential. Our community bridges these gaps by connecting professionals across Basel, Vienna, Berlin, and beyond. Instead of reinventing solutions country by country, we're building a shared knowledge base that strengthens everyone's practice.
Solve common problems efficiently by learning from each other's solutions
Build collective strength to establish recognized industry standards
Benefit from diverse perspectives and approaches across different cultures

Join us in strengthening our profession
