For decades, the photograph was the door opener of journalism — the image that stopped you mid-scroll, that made you read the article. Today, that role increasingly belongs to the visualization.

A well-crafted chart, map, or graphic doesn't just catch the eye — it orients the reader, puts numbers into perspective, and reveals what words alone cannot convey. Studies show that articles with data visualizations are read to completion far more often, and that visuals are shared even when the article itself is not.

Visual journalism is not new. But the tools, the formats, and the expectations have changed dramatically. Newsrooms that once had a single graphics desk now build entire teams around visual storytelling — combining data analysis, design, code, and editorial judgment into a new kind of practice.

For our next On Data And Design session, we bring together three practitioners from three of the world's leading editorial environments to explore what this craft looks like from the inside — the process, the decisions, the constraints, and the possibilities.
